Best e-signature APIs

On list price, DocuSeal at $0.20 a document and Firma at about five euro cents are the cheapest e-signature APIs we found, Docusign has the widest reach, and docuinked is the one built around agents that can prepare but never send alone.

How we picked

We compared what a developer pays and meets in the first week: the price per document at list, whether test mode is free, how fields are placed, and whether embedded signing is on the API plan or gated higher. Facts come from vendor pages read on 2026-11-07, or from third parties where the vendor page failed, marked as such. Prices are US dollars unless noted.

The APIs in short

DocuSeal. The best price for most teams that want a known unit cost, and the code is open, so you can run it yourself. Accepts DOCX and HTML as well as PDF.

Firma. The lowest list price we saw. It has listings and a launch, but we found no published traction.

BoldSign and SignWell. Easy entry points with free allowances. Both put branding and embedding within reach of a small plan.

Docusign and Dropbox Sign. The names signers know. Their API plans cost more per document, and embedded signing sits on higher tiers.

docuinked. Free in the beta. One call creates a draft and can send it. Keys can be set to send directly from your own server, need a person's approval, or only create drafts. Over MCP, every caller is treated as an agent and a live send waits for a named person. Every finished PDF is sealed with an outside timestamp and comes with an evidence record. See the API reference and test mode.

Where others are better

  • You need a price you can put in a model today. DocuSeal, Firma, BoldSign and SignWell all publish one.
  • You generate from DOCX or HTML. DocuSeal takes them. We take finished PDFs only.
  • You need high volume now. Our beta cap is 100 live sends a day per account. Bulk send is coming.
  • You need SMS codes, ID checks or EU qualified signatures. Several vendors sell these. We don't yet.
  • You need audit reports or an Adobe-trusted seal. We have neither yet. Acrobat shows our seal's signer as unknown until you trust our certificate.

Common questions

What should an e-signature API cost per document?

At list price in November 2026, the range we found runs from about 5 cents to about $1.50 at entry plans, and more at the top of seat-based plans. The cost of sending one document is far below that, so price reflects support, brand and compliance work.

Is embedded signing extra on most APIs?

On some. Docusign and Dropbox Sign put it on higher tiers, per the sources above. DocuSeal, BoldSign and SignWell include it on the API. In docuinked it is part of the white-label release, at no extra charge. See platforms.

How do I keep a retry from sending a contract twice?

Send an Idempotency-Key header on every write. With docuinked, the same key returns the first result and does no new work. Read the idempotency entry.

Can I switch e-signature APIs later?

Yes, if you keep your own copy of every signed PDF and its evidence. Field tags are the usual sticking point. docuinked reads {{signature:1}} tags and anchor text, so a PDF without any tags can still work.
