How to sign a PDF on Android

Android phones don't share one built-in signing tool, so the dependable free route is the Adobe Acrobat Reader app: open the PDF, choose Fill & Sign, draw your signature, and save.

Steps in Adobe Acrobat Reader

Install Adobe Acrobat Reader from Google Play. It's free. Adobe's old separate Fill & Sign app has been folded into it.

  1. Open the PDF in Acrobat Reader. From an email or a download, tap the file and choose Acrobat Reader as the app.
  2. Tap the edit button (a pencil), then Fill & Sign.
  3. Tap the signature button (a pen nib) and choose Create signature.
  4. Draw your signature with your finger and tap Done. Acrobat saves it for next time.
  5. Tap where the signature goes. Drag to move it and pull the corner to resize.
  6. Tap the check mark or Done, and the signed copy is saved.
  7. Use the Share button to send it back.

Labels shift between app versions. If your screen differs, the signing tools are always under Fill & Sign.

What about Google Drive?

Drive's PDF viewer can fill in PDFs that have form fields: text boxes, checkboxes and drop-downs. Signing support in Drive varies with the app version and your phone. If you see a pen or annotate button, you can draw on the page. If not, use Acrobat Reader.

Some phone makers ship their own PDF viewer with a pen tool. Those work too, but steps differ by brand, so we stick to the app that works the same everywhere.

Tips

  • Turn the phone sideways for a wider signing box.
  • Create your initials as a second saved signature if the form asks for them on every page.
  • If you can't type into a field, the PDF probably has no fields. Use Fill & Sign's text tool to add text anywhere.

When you need more than an image

Every phone tool stamps an image of your signature. It doesn't show when you signed or stop later edits. For contracts where you need other people's signatures and a record of each step, use an e-signature service: each person signs from a link on whatever phone they have. Common questions

Do I need an Adobe account to sign a PDF on Android?

For a basic signature, Acrobat Reader may ask you to sign in, depending on the version. Signing in also lets your saved signature follow you to other devices.

Can I sign a PDF on Android without installing anything?

Sometimes. Your phone's own file viewer or Google Drive may have a pen tool, depending on brand and version. If yours doesn't, Acrobat Reader is free.

Why does my signature look shaky on my phone?

Small screens and fast strokes cause it. Turn the phone sideways, sign more slowly, and zoom the page out before you place it.
